Bosch Rexroth’s Hägglunds division, a leader in hydraulic drive systems, has officially launched the CA280, the latest and most powerful addition to its renowned CA radial piston hydraulic motor series. Engineered for the most demanding heavy-duty applications, particularly within the mining sector, the CA280 promises unparalleled torque in a compact, robust, and reliable package.

The Genesis of Compact Power: The Hägglunds CA Series

The Hägglunds CA radial piston hydraulic motor series was conceived with a singular vision: to deliver a resilient and potent solution for applications where both size and weight are critical constraints. The result is a hydraulic drive system that marries compactness with the hallmark durability, exceptional performance, and unwavering reliability synonymous with Bosch Rexroth’s Hägglunds motors. Its small envelope size and lightweight construction contribute to an outstanding power-to-weight ratio, making it an ideal choice for space-restricted environments.

After an extensive period of rigorous development, testing, and validation, the CA280 emerges as the largest model in the CA series, poised to revolutionize mining and other industrial applications. Daniel Kajhager, Head of Global Engineering at Hägglunds, emphasized the core philosophy behind its creation: “The focus has been clear: delivering high torque in a compact format, without compromising on robustness or reliability.”

This new motor significantly extends the capabilities of the CA platform, which is inherently designed for demanding scenarios where performance cannot be sacrificed despite limited space. The mining industry, with its diverse and challenging operations, stands to benefit immensely. Applications range from the precision and power required in raise boring rigs to the continuous, heavy-duty demands of apron feeders and belt conveyors.

Unrivalled Features for Optimal Operation

The Hägglunds CA motor series is celebrated for several key features that contribute to its operational excellence and competitive advantage:

•Numerous Mounting Options: Providing flexibility for integration into various machinery designs.

•Useful Through-Hole: Facilitating easier installation and accommodating shafts or cables through the motor’s centre.

•Insensitivity to Shock Loads: A critical attribute in harsh environments, ensuring consistent performance and longevity even under sudden, heavy impacts.

These features collectively ensure that when properly matched to specific operational needs, the Hägglunds CA series, including the new CA280, delivers tangible competitive advantages in plant operations.

The Engineering Behind the Power

At its core, the Bosch Rexroth Hägglunds CA hydraulic industrial motor operates on the radial piston principle. It features a rotating cylinder block/hollow shaft encased within a stationary housing. The cylinder block is precisely mounted in fixed roller bearings within this housing.

An even number of pistons are radially positioned within bores inside the cylinder block. A sophisticated distributor system meticulously directs the incoming and outgoing hydraulic oil to and from these working pistons. Each piston engages with a cam roller.

When hydraulic pressure is applied to the pistons, the cam rollers are propelled against the sloped surface of a cam ring, which is rigidly connected to the stationary housing. This interaction generates torque. The cam rollers transfer the reaction force back to the pistons, which are guided within the cylinder block, initiating rotation. Consequently, the available torque is directly proportional to the pressure within the hydraulic system. This ingenious design ensures efficient and powerful conversion of hydraulic energy into mechanical rotation.

The introduction of the Hägglunds CA280 marks a significant milestone in hydraulic drive technology. By combining high torque output with a compact, durable, and reliable design, Bosch Rexroth continues to empower industries like mining to achieve greater efficiency, productivity, and operational resilience. The CA280 is not just a motor; it’s a testament to engineering innovation designed to tackle the toughest challenges head-on.
