Cohda Wireless, a leader in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology, and Spectrum FiftyNine, a specialist in compact V2X module hardware, have announced a collaboration aimed at enhancing safety and productivity within underground mining environments. This solution delivers advanced proximity awareness between mining personnel and vehicles, thereby reducing risk and improving operational efficiency in confined spaces.

The technology has been deployed at Rio Tinto’s Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia’s Umnugovi province, which is among the world’s largest copper and gold deposits. At this site, approximately 2,500 mine personnel utilize advanced safety features provided by Cohda Wireless and Spectrum FiftyNine, setting a new standard for proximity awareness in underground mines.

Cohda Wireless’s V2X technology, currently present in over 60% of connected vehicle trials globally, is well established in the mining sector. Spectrum FiftyNine, based in the Netherlands, contributes expertise in compact V2X module hardware designed for use in controlled environments.

The integrated solution can be incorporated into mining cap lamps or belt tags, offering vehicles real-time detection capabilities for nearby miners. Cohda Wireless’s proximity detection system enables operators to identify personnel equipped with Spectrum FiftyNine’s smartTag device, as well as other vehicles, even when line-of-sight is obstructed. The technology does not rely on GNSS, which enhances its suitability for underground applications.

Spectrum FiftyNine’s smartTag is a compact, low-power device that fits into miners’ cap lamps and delivers accurate 802.11p V2P (vehicle-to-person) detection within three meters. It utilizes Cohda’s proprietary mining firmware and operates seamlessly with Cohda’s MK5 units installed on mining vehicles, ensuring reliable communication and ranging. Additionally, the smartTag provides visual alerts via light flashes to notify wearers of nearby vehicles, thereby improving situational awareness.

Through this partnership, Cohda Wireless and Spectrum FiftyNine are advancing a robust solution designed to reduce accidents and enhance operational safety in underground mining operations globally.

Russell Kennett, Manager of Underground Technology at Oyu Tolgoi, stated: “At Rio Tinto, the safety and wellbeing of our employees remains our highest priority. We are pleased to support the deployment of innovative technology that improves situational awareness in demanding underground environments. The implementation of the Cohda Wireless and Spectrum FiftyNine solution at Oyu Tolgoi demonstrates how advancements from the automotive sector can contribute to safer, more efficient mining practices.”

Dr. Paul Gray, CEO of Cohda Wireless, observed that deploying intelligent transport solutions in mining substantially mitigates risks and supports productivity improvements. “There is growing global interest in technologies aimed at minimizing vehicle-related incidents, and we are pleased to implement this solution at a significant mine such as Oyu Tolgoi,” remarked Dr. Gray.

He further noted, “Underground mining environments pose considerable risks due to the close interaction of heavy machinery and personnel. Our collaboration with Spectrum FiftyNine focuses on delivering safety applications specifically tailored for these conditions.”

Martijn Broens, CEO and Founder of Spectrum FiftyNine, commented: “Our initial V2X module development prioritized simplified design and enhanced RF performance. Partnering with Cohda enabled expansion into critical sectors like agriculture, warehousing, infrastructure, logistics, and mining—industries where safety is essential. By miniaturizing our smartTag, we have created a specialized solution suited for personal protective equipment in mining. Despite its size and low power consumption, the smartTag offers reliable performance.”
