Johannesburg, South Africa – Kumba Iron Ore, a leading global supplier of seaborne iron ore, has announced a significant stride in its decarbonization strategy through an embedded energy offtake agreement (EOA) with Envusa Energy. This partnership will facilitate the supply of renewable electricity to Kumba’s Sishen mine, originating from the forthcoming Sishen Solar Photovoltaic (PV) project.

The Sishen Solar PV project is poised to deliver 63 MW of renewable electricity, with initial power generation anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2027. Upon full operationalization, this solar facility is projected to reduce approximately 35% of Sishen’s current Scope 2 carbon emissions. This initiative directly supports Kumba’s ambitious target to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 28% from its 2020 re-baseline by 2030. Furthermore, this agreement aligns with Anglo American’s broader 2030 climate commitments, underscoring Kumba’s dedication to sustainable mining practices.

Pioneering Renewable Energy Projects

This Sishen Solar PV project represents the inaugural embedded renewable energy initiative to reach this advanced stage under the Envusa Energy programme. It follows the successful implementation of Envusa’s Koruson 2 cluster, which includes the 240 MW MooiPlaats Solar PV project and the 140 MW Umsobomvu and Hartebeesthoek wind farms, strategically located across the Eastern and Northern Cape provinces.

Innovative Land Use and Capacity

In an innovative approach to land utilization, Kumba will develop the solar facility on the G80 Waste Rock Dump within the Sishen mine boundary. This transformative project repurposes previously disturbed mining land into a vital renewable energy infrastructure. The company emphasized that this endeavor necessitated sophisticated engineering solutions to navigate complex geotechnical conditions, thereby maximizing the long-term value of the site.

The facility is designed with an installed capacity of 72.5 MWp (DC) and will supply 63 MW (AC) of renewable electricity to the mine. When combined with the 11 MW of wheeled renewable energy already powering the Kolomela mine via Envusa’s Koruson 2 cluster, this project will elevate Kumba’s renewable energy penetration to approximately 45% across its operations.

Community Engagement and Economic Development

Kumba is committed to fostering community participation and local economic development through this project. The initiative will prioritize employment opportunities for host communities, offer accredited skills development programs, and create avenues for local businesses during both the construction and operational phases. A key aspect of this commitment is the incorporation of community ownership, with the Sishen Iron Ore Company Community Development Trust (SIOC CDT) acquiring a 10% interest in the solar PV project. The SIOC CDT plans to reinvest dividend income into critical areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, skills development, job creation, and sustainable livelihood initiatives within the surrounding communities.

Kumba CEO, Mpumi Zikalala, remarked on the significance of the agreement: “The Sishen solar PV project is designed to deliver reliable, cost-competitive renewable energy and, together with Kolomela, which has been receiving 11 MW in wheeled renewable energy since March 2026, strengthens the pathway to a lower-carbon future. The project advances our ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2030 and supports Anglo American’s 2030 climate target.”
