Ambra Solutions, a Canadian specialist in private wireless networks for mission-critical industries, has partnered with IAMGOLD Corporation and Nokia to deliver a robust digital transformation at the Côté Gold mine between Timmins and Sudbury. Leveraging Nokia’s Modular Private Wireless (MPW) platform, Ambra deployed a state-of-the-art 4G/5G network designed to modernise mine communications and enable advanced automation and remote operations.
The private 4G/5G network delivers pervasive coverage above and below ground, replacing legacy Wi-Fi systems that struggled with reliability and mobility. Key features include ultra-low latency under 10 milliseconds, bandwidth exceeding 1 Gbps, and support for up to 1,000 connected devices—far outpacing typical Wi-Fi performance. The network ensures stable, high-speed communication for autonomous vehicles, equipment, and real-time operational data. Reliability is enhanced through redundant architecture and dedicated spectrum, minimising interference and signal loss. Compared to Wi-Fi, downtime has dropped by 30%, while connection failures have almost disappeared.
With the new network, Côté Gold automates its vehicle fleet and operates equipment remotely with precision. Real-time data supports faster decision-making, directly optimising productivity. Safety has improved measurably: connectivity disruptions leading to safety incidents have been reduced by over 40%, and operational downtime for maintenance has decreased by 25%. Workers benefit from reliable voice and emergency communications, ensuring quick response times and safer environments.
The project combines IAMGOLD’s vision for digital transformation, Ambra’s mining-focused engineering and deployment expertise, and Nokia’s proven private wireless technology. Ambra led the network’s design and integration, ensuring seamless coverage and scalable architecture. Nokia supplied the wireless infrastructure, enabling autonomous haul trucks, drills, and real-time operations without reliance on public connectivity.
The commissioned network is built to scale with the mine’s expansion, supporting future automation and operational requirements. Ongoing collaboration among IAMGOLD, Ambra, and Nokia positions Côté Gold as a benchmark for safer, smarter, and more sustainable mining. This initiative sets a new standard for the Canadian mining sector, paving the way for mines of the future.
