Master Drilling Commissions Canada’s First Fully Remote Raise boring System at Agnico Eagle’s Odyssey Mine

Master Drilling has achieved a significant milestone in Canadian mining, successfully commissioning the country’s first fully remote raise boring system at Agnico Eagle’s Odyssey Mine in Quebec.

The project marks the operational debut of Master Drilling’s advanced RD7 remote raise drill. Installed on the 65 Level underground, the machine is operated entirely from a dedicated surface control room, eliminating the need for personnel to be stationed underground during drilling operations.

The commissioning began with the successful reaming of a 220-metre hole using a 5.5-metre diameter reamer. The operation demonstrated exceptional precision, stability, and efficiency, validating the RD7’s readiness for full production in one of Canada’s most technically demanding mining environments.

Traditional raise boring requires skilled crews to work in confined spaces deep underground — often in areas with elevated rock stress, heat, and ventilation challenges. The RD7 system fundamentally changes this model by relocating operators to the safety of the surface while maintaining real-time control and monitoring of the entire operation.

The Odyssey Mine provided full infrastructure support, including a purpose-built surface control room, high-speed data links, and specialized power systems. This close collaboration between Master Drilling and Agnico Eagle was critical to the rapid and successful implementation.

As mining depths increase and ground conditions become more challenging, technologies that reduce personnel exposure while maintaining or improving productivity are becoming strategically vital.
