Mining is a cornerstone of the Southern African economy, which is richly endowed with key mineral reserves including platinum group metals (PGMs), diamonds, gold, coal, copper, and cobalt. The region accounts for roughly half of the world’s vanadium, platinum, and diamonds.
Key Minerals and Production
Southern Africa is a global leader in the production of several critical minerals essential for the global energy transition.
- PGMs (Platinum, Palladium, Chromium): South Africa is the world’s largest producer of platinum, chromium, and manganese. The region holds approximately three-quarters of the world’s viable chromite ore resources.
- Diamonds: Botswana is the world’s second-largest producer of diamonds by value, and South Africa is also a significant producer.
- Gold: Historically a major industry, gold production has declined from its peak but remains significant, with some of the world’s deepest mines located in South Africa.
- Coal: South Africa is a major coal producer and the world’s third-largest exporter, with much of the output used for domestic power generation.
- Battery Minerals: The region holds significant reserves of critical minerals like cobalt, graphite, and lithium, with countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) leading global cobalt production.
Economic and Social Impact
Mining has been a strategic industry in the region, contributing significantly to the gross national product and employment in many Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states. The industry has a long history, dating back to pre-colonial times, with large-scale development accelerating after the discovery of diamonds and gold in the late 19th century.
However, the sector faces challenges, including:
- Infrastructure Gaps: The region receives less than 10% of global mining exploration spending despite its vast potential, highlighting a significant financial gap and need for investment.
- Regulation and Policy: SADC has implemented a Protocol on Mining to harmonize policies and encourage investment and collaboration, while also addressing issues like conflict minerals through the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.
- Working Conditions: Historical and ongoing concerns about safety, health risks (such as silicosis and tuberculosis), and labour relations have been significant issues within the industry.
