Newfoundland Treasure Hunter finds $37,000 prize

The Newfoundland bonus prize in The Northern Miner’s Great Canadian Treasure Hunt has been successfully claimed by a treasure hunter from Ontario, who is happily travelling back from Newfoundland on Friday. The finder uncovered six one-ounce coins worth $37,428.

The hunter traced clues from a Northern Miner story on Argentia, a spot in a rugged bay in southeast Newfoundland that was the scene of a brief silver boom in the late 19th century. The story linked Argentia’s exploration past through its role in Word War Two to its status today as a deep water port.

Additional details, including an interview with the winner and a closer look at the discovery, will be released next week.

The Northern Miner Treasure Hunt’s $1 million grand prize is still out there. We release clues monthly as part of the quest.
