Epiroc Deep Automation Platform: Advancements and Implementation

After a period of development and testing at Agnico Eagle’s Odyssey Mine in Canada, Epiroc has officially rolled out the latest updates to its Deep Automation platform. This release marks a significant step forward in the evolution of underground mining automation.

According to Epiroc, Deep Automation now introduces genuine 3D operational capabilities tailored for underground environments. This innovation allows for the coordination of autonomous truck haulage across intricate, multi-level ramp systems. As a result, mining operations benefit from enhanced fleet visualisation and improved traffic management, which contribute to safer and more efficient workflows, even at depths that have historically posed operational challenges.

Field Testing and Industry Feedback

Ghislain Couture, Superintendent Automation at Agnico Eagle’s Odyssey Mine, commented on the progress: “The tests conducted at the Odyssey mine demonstrate tangible progress and confirm that the solution is moving in the right direction. This innovation paves the way for more efficient and safer operations, and it is encouraging to see the trials progressing successfully.”

Intelligent Traffic Management

Deep Automation features advanced traffic management logic, which eliminates deadlocks and operational delays by organising meet-and-pass scenarios at designated meeting points. Autonomous mine trucks are now equipped to proactively avoid encounters in narrow drifts where passing is not feasible, ensuring smoother traffic flow and reducing interruptions in daily operations.

Operational Efficiency and Safety

Johannes Mutamba, Global Product Manager Deep Automation – Trucks at Epiroc’s Underground division, emphasised the benefits: “Epiroc’s Deep Automation makes fast, intelligent decisions to boost safety, reduce downtime and increase overall efficiency. Whether machines are sharing ramps or collaborating on joint assignments, Deep Automation ensures optimal task completion.”

Automation-Ready Equipment and System Compatibility

Alongside these advancements, Epiroc’s Minetruck MT54 S and MT65 S models are now automation-ready, providing mining operations with robust options for automating their underground fleets. The new Deep Automation upgrades are also compatible with all underground Scooptram loaders that are supported by the system, offering additional flexibility for mining operations aiming to expand their automation capabilities.

Enhanced Operator Visibility

Reflecting on the evolution of the platform, Mutamba added: “Evolved from our customers’ needs, Epiroc’s Deep Automation looks better than ever and empowers operators with real-time, three-dimensional visibility of their machines underground.”
