Metso has secured a significant order valued at approximately €180 million ($210 million) to supply engineering expertise and key process equipment for a new primary copper smelter project in Asia. The copper smelter complex is designed with a planned annual production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of copper cathodes and 1.1 million tonnes of sulphuric acid.
The new copper smelting line will utilize Metso’s Outotec® Flash Smelting, PS Converting, and Lurec® technologies. The scope encompasses the design and provision of essential process equipment for all major operational areas of the smelter complex. This includes facilities for gas cleaning, sulphuric acid production, copper electrolytic refining, and precious metals refining. Additionally, the order covers site services and spare parts supply.
Piia Karhu, President of Minerals at Metso, commented, “We are very pleased to have received this order. The Outotec Copper Flash Smelting method, part of the Metso Plus portfolio, remains the world’s most widely implemented technology for large-scale copper smelting operations.”
As a leading technology provider in the copper processing sector, Metso delivers comprehensive solutions covering the entire value chain from concentrate processing through to refined copper production. The Metso Plus suite of solutions enables considerable reductions in CO₂ emissions while enhancing both energy and water efficiency, and achieving high metal recovery rates—even from challenging feedstocks.
Metso’s offering for copper smelting comprises technologies such as Outotec Flash Smelting and Ausmelt® processes, supplemented by Lurec technology to optimize gas cleaning and sulphuric acid recovery. Furthermore, Metso provides advanced e-Scrap smelting technologies for electronic waste recycling alongside a full range of lifecycle services.
