Global technology software and engineering powerhouse Emerson has announced a strategic partnership with Aramco to co-develop next-generation corrosion management solutions.
For Aramco, managing corrosion is far more than a maintenance task; it is a strategic priority directly linked to operational performance, safety, and environmental stewardship. By transitioning to continuous, digital corrosion monitoring, the company is eliminating hazardous and inefficient manual measurements, replacing them with a reliable, real-time data stream that drives better decision-making.
The financial and operational impacts of this digital shift are already highly visible. Speaking at the Middle East Metallurgy, Corrosion & Coatings (MECOC) Expo earlier this year, Wail A Al Jaafari, Aramco’s Executive Vice President of Technical Services, highlighted the incredible ROI of these initiatives. According to Al Jaafari, Aramco has invested $70 million in corrosion management technologies—resulting in an astounding $770 million in cost savings and avoidance.
“AI-powered solutions are now anticipating corrosion before it happens, leveraging a vast network of IIoT sensors across our facilities and pipelines,” Al Jaafari noted. “These sensors provide more than 10 million corrosion-monitoring readings annually across over 40 facilities.”
A cornerstone of this success is Aramco’s HySCorr (Hybrid Statistical Corrosion Prediction Model). Built on 20 years of historical data, HySCorr utilizes machine learning alongside advanced flow and corrosion modeling to dynamically predict pipeline health, safeguarding thousands of kilometers of critical infrastructure.
Now, through this new R&D collaboration, Aramco is combining its proprietary intellectual property with Emerson’s industry-leading technological stack. Emerson will bring its expertise in ultrasonic online corrosion monitoring, seamless wireless connectivity, and continuous data collection to create a bespoke, fit-for-purpose solution for Aramco’s vast operations.
“Emerson is uniquely positioned to co-innovate next-generation corrosion monitoring solutions that are cost-effective, scalable, and customized for Aramco,” said Ram Krishnan, Chief Operating Officer for Emerson. “We look forward to working with Aramco to develop not only a corrosion solution for its vast operations but one that will also be a valuable tool for many other industries.”
