KAP Minerals and Japanese industrial giant Hanwa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to forge a strategic partnership focused on offtake supply and the development of downstream critical minerals supply chains. This collaboration aims to bridge the resource wealth of Northern Ontario with Japan’s advanced manufacturing sector.

The agreement establishes a comprehensive framework for long-term commercial collaboration, targeting two distinct phases of development at KAP Minerals’ flagship project near Kapuskasing, Ontario.

A Two-Phased Approach to Mineral Development

The partnership is structured to scale alongside the project’s growth, ensuring both immediate supply and long-term processing capabilities:

  • Phase 1: Offtake and Distribution – Hanwa will manage the purchase and global distribution of phosphate and rare earth element (REE) concentrates produced at the Kapuskasing site.
  • Phase 2: Midstream Processing – The companies will collaborate to establish processing capacity within Ontario. This includes the production of purified phosphoric acid and an increased supply of high-grade phosphate and REE concentrates.

Transforming the Historic Agrium Mine

KAP Minerals is redeveloping the historic Agrium phosphate mine and tailings complex. The project is being transformed into a multi-product critical minerals platform designed to support the global energy transition.

Projected Production Capacities:

  • Initial Phase: 70,000 to 100,000 tonnes per year (t/y) of phosphate product.
  • Full Scale: Approximately 450,000 t/y of high-grade phosphate concentrate.
  • Additional Output: Rare earth concentrates and other minerals essential for defense and advanced technology supply chains.

Strengthening Global Supply Chain ResilienceUnder the MoU, Hanwa will leverage its vast global network to connect KAP’s products with battery manufacturers, automotive companies, and magnet producers

“This partnership with Hanwa represents a major step forward in establishing the Kapuskasing project as a cornerstone of the Canada–Japan critical minerals relationship,” said Geoff Hampson, CEO of KAP Minerals. “Together, we are building a supply chain that connects Northern Ontario’s resources with the industries shaping the future of energy, defense, and mobility.”

Shoji Shirasawa, Managing Executive Officer at Hanwa, emphasized the importance of secure sourcing:
“Our partnership creates an opportunity to connect Japan’s industrial demand with a secure, allied source of phosphate and rare earth materials from Canada. We look forward to building a resilient supply chain that benefits both nations.”

Government Support for Northern Ontario Mining

The partnership has garnered significant praise from Ontario provincial leaders, who view the project as a win for both economic growth and geopolitical security.

George Pirie, Ontario Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth, noted that the MoU will help secure reliable access to minerals while creating sustainable jobs in Kapuskasing.

Stephen Lecce, Ontario Minister of Energy and Mines, highlighted the strategic importance of the deal:
“Ontario and Japan are proving that trusted democratic allies can build secure supply chains together, without relying on hostile or unstable regimes. Northern Ontario will help power the next generation of batteries and defense technologies, creating good-paying jobs here at home.”

Why This Matters for Investors and the Industry

This partnership signals a shift toward “friend-shoring” critical mineral supplies. By integrating Canadian extraction with Japanese industrial expertise, KAP Minerals and Hanwa are positioned to become key players in the EV battery supply chain and the permanent magnet market, reducing North American and Japanese reliance on volatile foreign markets.
