Holcim UK has taken a significant step in its journey towards net zero by introducing 20 new LiuGong 870HE electric wheel loaders across its aggregate and asphalt sites. This move not only marks a milestone for the company but also signals a broader shift in the construction materials sector towards sustainable, low-emission operations.
The deployment of these 24,640 kg loaders, each powered by a robust 423kWh LFP battery, is part of Holcim UK’s ongoing commitment to decarbonise its operations. With a 4.7 m³ bucket capacity, rapid 80-minute charging, and up to nine hours of runtime, the LiuGong 870HE stands out as one of the largest pure electric vehicles of its kind in the industry. The company’s decision to invest in this technology follows a successful year-long trial at the challenging Callow Rock Quarry in Somerset, where the loader demonstrated its ability to handle steep inclines and variable workloads with impressive reliability.
During the trial, the loader operated from 6am to 5pm, requiring only a 30-minute lunchtime charge thanks to an onsite 200kW charger. This operational flexibility is crucial for aggregate and asphalt sites, where uptime and adaptability directly impact productivity. The positive results from Callow Rock have paved the way for a wider rollout, with the new machines now being delivered to selected sites across the UK.
Holcim UK’s partnership with LiuGong has been instrumental in tailoring the loader’s design to meet the specific needs of UK operations. Tom Redfern, Head of Sustainability at Holcim UK, highlighted the environmental and cost benefits, as well as the positive feedback from drivers. He also noted LiuGong’s responsiveness in incorporating user feedback into the cab design, underscoring the importance of close collaboration between equipment suppliers and operators in accelerating the adoption of electric machinery.
Harry Mellor, Sales Director of LiuGong UK & Ireland, echoed this sentiment, describing the rollout as a testament to the power of partnership, proven technology, and operational confidence in driving the transition to electric fleets.
This initiative builds on Holcim UK’s earlier milestone of introducing the first electric wheel loader to operate in Europe in 2023. The new loaders join a growing fleet of electric vehicles at Holcim’s UK sites, including e-mixer trucks, cement lorries, mobile plant, and on-site utility vehicles. These investments are expected to deliver not only emissions reductions but also lower operating costs and improved uptime, supporting Holcim’s broader climate commitments and setting a benchmark for the industry.
As the construction materials sector faces increasing pressure to decarbonise, Holcim UK’s experience demonstrates the viability of electric heavy equipment in demanding environments. The company’s approach—combining rigorous field trials, strategic partnerships, and a focus on operational performance—offers a blueprint for others seeking to accelerate their own sustainability transitions.
