Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has launched serial production of its A30 Electric and A40 Electric articulated haulers, marking a global first for electric machines of this size. Both models feature advanced lithium-ion battery systems, engineered for high performance and durability in demanding construction environments. These batteries can be fully recharged in less than two hours when utilising Volvo CE’s proprietary fast-charging infrastructure, enabling rapid turnaround and maximising uptime on site. This significant milestone not only transforms the landscape of heavy construction machinery but also reinforces Volvo CE’s reputation as a pioneer in sustainable technology and industry innovation.
Building on Volvo CE’s legacy as the inventor of the articulated hauler, this advancement brings battery-electric articulated hauling from prototype to industrial reality. First unveiled at Bauma 2025, the A30 Electric and A40 Electric have generated substantial interest among customers in quarrying and mining sectors, who increasingly seek zero-emission solutions that deliver strong productivity and operational efficiency. The electric haulers demonstrate exceptional energy management, with intelligent systems optimising power consumption and regenerative braking contributing to extended battery life.
Production is underway at Volvo CE’s Braås facility in Sweden – the historic birthplace of the world’s first articulated hauler, Gravel Charlie, introduced in 1966. Over fifty years later, the launch of electric hauler manufacturing at this site highlights the continuity of Volvo CE’s engineering excellence and the rapid evolution of its technological capabilities. The company’s commitment to sustainability is further underscored by Braås achieving carbon-neutral manufacturing status and earning global recognition for environmental stewardship.
Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE, stated: “Starting serial production of electric articulated haulers of this size is a proud moment for Volvo CE. It demonstrates our ambition to lead the industry’s transformation is matched by tangible results. This milestone confirms that electric solutions can meet the rigorous demands of heavy, high-productivity applications, and signals that meaningful change is happening.”
With payload capacities of 29 tonnes for the A30 Electric and 39 tonnes for the A40 Electric, these models are among the largest in Volvo CE’s expanding line-up of electric vehicles. Articulated haulers are traditionally high-utilisation, energy-intensive machines, and electrification delivers substantial reductions in emissions while offering attractive total cost of ownership benefits. Operators can expect up to six hours of continuous operation per charge, with smart charging routines minimising downtime. Real-world trials have shown that the electric models deliver consistent performance even in challenging conditions, and their quiet operation reduces onsite noise pollution.
The first units are scheduled for delivery to customers in the UK and Norway within weeks, with broader roll-out across Europe planned for the second half of 2026. Early adopters in the UK have reported significant reductions in fuel costs and carbon emissions, with one customer noting a 30% decrease in total operating expenses compared to traditional diesel models. Testimonials highlight the ease of integration into existing fleets and the tangible benefits for both environmental and operational targets. In Norway, a quarry operator praised the reliability and efficiency of the A40 Electric, stating: “Switching to electric has not only lowered our emissions but improved our bottom line through reduced maintenance and energy costs.”
Fredrik Tjernström, Electromobility Solutions Sales at Volvo CE, commented: “There is a real sense of pride in seeing this move from ambition to reality – not just because we are first, but because we are delivering exactly as promised. Customer interest since Bauma has been strong, with demand extending beyond the initial production schedule. The feedback from operators confirms that electric haulers offer both environmental and economic advantages.”
Looking forward, Volvo CE’s move into serial production of electric haulers aligns with its broader strategy to expand innovative solutions and support customer sustainability goals. The company’s leadership is further recognised through industry awards, such as the European Green Machinery Award, and strategic partnerships with renewable energy providers to advance the adoption of clean technologies. Volvo CE continues to set benchmarks for sustainable construction equipment, driving progress and shaping the future of the industry.
