On March 3, XCMG and Codelco formalised their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Chile. The event was attended by Liu Jiansen, Vice President of XCMG Machinery, and Mauricio Acuna, Chief Procurement Officer of Codelco. This milestone followed a February visit to XCMG’s factory in Xuzhou, where Codelco Chairman Maximo Pacheco met with XCMG Chairman Yang Dongsheng. The agreement signals a shared commitment to advancing sustainable mining practices in the region.
Transitioning to XCMG’s global partnerships, the company has previously engaged with major mining organisations such as Fortescue, Rio Tinto and BHP. XCMG’s mining equipment, including the XDE130 truck, is already operational in Chile at Pucobre’s El Espino project. The new MoU, however, is poised to elevate XCMG’s footprint in the Chilean mining landscape, building on a foundation of close engagement and successful contracts with international mining leaders.
Looking ahead, XCMG emphasises the growing industry consensus around electrification and intelligent transformation of mining equipment. The company has invested heavily in research and development, resulting in a comprehensive portfolio of zero-carbon mining solutions. Advanced offerings include all-electric rigid and wide-body mining trucks, autonomous vehicles, large electric excavators, loaders and dozers. Among these innovations, battery swapping technology stands out: it enables quick replacement of depleted batteries, allowing trucks like the 100 unmanned electric units at China Huaneng’s Yimin coal mine to operate continuously and efficiently. This reduces downtime and supports large-scale, emission-free operations—a crucial step towards sustainable mining.
Reflecting a balanced perspective, Codelco has expressed optimism about the partnership, anticipating that the alliance will support its goals for safer and cleaner operations. Industry experts note that electrification not only lowers environmental impact but also enhances operational safety and efficiency, making it a transformative trend for global mining. “The shift towards electric and autonomous equipment is fundamental for the industry’s future, enabling mines to meet increasingly stringent sustainability standards,” commented mining consultant Dr. Alan Peterson.
